~ R.G.S. "Miller Era" Type III Box Car ~

These cars came to the R.G.S. in mid-1938 following the demise of the Colorado and Southern. Different stories circluate as to the whys and wherefores of how they were acquired, but with their All Steel Underframes and Cast Steel "T" Section Bettendorf Trucks, they were surely the most "modern" of all the cars that ever plied the R.G.S.'s rails. But alas, they weren't to last long there. Afer Mr. Miller left the R.G.S., all but one car were sold to the Chicago Freight Car Parts Company for rebuilding in Salida, whereupon they were subsequently re-sold to the U.S. Governement for the "War Effort".

So if you're modeling the R.G.S. during what's known as the "Transition Era", you'll probebly be needing at least a couple of these to show as examples. And if not? Oh, what the heck. The fact thay they're so markedly different in appearance from the many Truss Rod bearing cars so common to the Narrow Gauge, you might end up with a couple "just because..." After all, it's your railroad. Right?

The model you see above was built for us by our old friend, Bill Schaefer . Worthy of note is these car kits were first introduced by Overland Models, back in the 1980's, which is why you see " Built from an OMI kit ." noted on the photo above. We acquired the tooling for the OMI kit line some years ago, but never got around to re-issuing the Boxcars and Gondolas due to some serious problems with a couple of the molds.

Though still a re-issue of the OMI cars, the cars now come equipped with our own C&S Cast Steel Trucks, a redesigned Brake Shot ( Still one piece though. ) and the new Train-Line-to-Brake-Cylinder crossover pipe which is a one piece lost-wax brass casting that FITS.

This model weighs in at right about 3.5 ounces. It comes complete with the accurately scaled, easy-to-assemble, ( Read Snap Together ) free rolling "Bettendorf" Type "Cast Steel" Trucks, moulded in that slippery engineering plastic we use for this purpose, "Celcon". And of course, the now Standard of the Industry P-B-L Nickel Plated Brass Wheelsets.

All parts of this model kit, save for the hand grabs, cross-over piping and wheelsets are injection moulded in high impact styrene plastic. Proper Thin Filmed Decals and Genuine Kadee ® Couplers are included too, of course...
