Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works back in 1882, and already close to seventy years old when chosen for this prestigious honor, now I asks you What aficionado of the Narrow Gauge is there that could resist having at least a short look-see at #268 as she appeared in 1949, all gussied up for the World's Fair held that year ?

Her classic Baldwin lines, that paint scheme which offered a foregleam of what the D&RGW's Passenger Fleet would look like in years to come, and the fact that "she weren't no park engine" all sing out "I AM the Narrow Gauge !", Don't they ?

#268 will return late in 2004, in this guise, and as earlier iterations as well, for those whose modeling tastes tend to lean towards the pre-war ( 1930's ) and earlier post-war ( 1940's ) eras. Each modeled as accurately as possible to reflect their particular time period.

Noteworthy locomotive-specific details visible in this photo include

  • Mountain Railroading required plenty of reserve stopping power, so #268 sports twin 11 Inch Airpumps.
  • That peculiar looking device on the pilot deck raised and lowered the "plow / flanger" on the locomotive's lead truck. ( Flanger barely visible in this view. )
  • A full width all welded airtank on her tender.
  • A more modern "conventional appearing" headlight...
  • And of course, those "typically Baldwin" domes which set her apart from her sister, the #278.
  • A "Loco Light" ( Old Style ) Generator for keeping that headlight burning brightly !

These models were constructed from Firm Reservations ONLY, requiring a deposit. Over-runs were available on a first-come-first-served basis.

These models have long since sold out. They rarely turn up on the used market, but if you're really Jones'n for one, we keep a running "want" list. CLICK HERE to send us your own personal "want" list. Should one turn up we'll let you know.
