~ FACTORY PAINTED COAL FIRED 16 TON SHAY ~

Here's an example of a Coal Fired 16 Ton Shay in its heyday. They weren't common out here on the USA's "left coast", but in areas where coal was easily obtained, Coal was the fuel of preference. It created zillions of BTU's and what remained after it was spent could be used to ballast track. You couldn't say that about wood or oil, could you?

Though the road name on this model is ficticious, (we think anyways...), it's believeable. ( Who knows? It might be right up yer alley, so to speak?) And though the locomotive itself follows no specific prototype, it is represent- ative of scores of its kind that the Lima Factory turned out in the early days, and that were rebuilt and rebuilt along the way.

We installed "Lima Arc Headlamps" on this old girl to give her a bit more personality! And of course, as was pretty much the order-of-the-day, she's equipped with a don't-set-the-woods-afire "Spark Arrestor" that you can install, or not at your descretion. (Being long-time residents of Chama, New Mexico however, we would highly recommend its installation! Little hot cinders can cause BIG problems in the woods!

It should please you to learn that these models RUN as magnificently as they LOOK! A three day "think tank" visit with the builder last month brought a meeting of minds that, "Engineer-to-Engineer", resulted in what you see here, plus what you will yet see when you get to set yours on the track! Our Pre-Production Samples of the Coal and Oil Fired Versions were run continuously for days on end. (Days and nights as a matter of fact!) The results? Nothing changed! (Well, maybe the gears got a little shinier to the eye...) Smooth, Powerful, yet virtually silent operation is the best way to describe how they ran!

And tractive effort? Well, we have seven somewhat battered freight cars that live on our test layout... ( Stuff that for one reason or another is unsaleable generally ends up there. Partially completed one-offs and the like...) Among these are five of our Injection Molded Plastic Cars built-up, plus an "0404" Brass Caboose and a Conoco Tank with bad trucks. (The latter won't roll down a 3.5 percent grade without help...) Yet each one of these little shays could PUSH this mongrel of a consist up our ruling 3.5% grade without so much as ever spinning a driver!

By comparison, with the exception of the #375, not one of the "C" Class Locos we tried, nor any of the Ten-Wheelers could accomplish the same feat! 'Guess old Ephraim Shay was onto something after all, eh?

As mentioned previously, the "Spark Arrestor" on the Production Models, as can be seen on this one, is made of Stainless Steel Wire Screen... SEE THROUGH Screen to boot!
